The first rule of The Printed Word Club is we don’t talk about…. Whoops! Fancy getting to grips with letterpress printing this Spring and kick starting your creativity for 2024? Then why not join us for this 5 week letterpress taster course and at the same time help contribute to our fundraiser campaign, raising money for WYPW to run accessible printmaking activities for young people here in our new Huddersfield Piazza print space?!
Over the course of February, we’ll be inviting you to learn all about the craft of letterpress and have a go at getting inky on our heritage presses – for the geeks amongst you we’ve got a Stephenson Blake proofing press, a ten-eight Ayers Jardine Showcard press and an Adana press all ready and waiting to help you create some beautifully printed type. This 5-week course will cover the following and grow your confidence in working within a collaborative maker space:
Week 1: Learn the basics of how to use the presses and produce a collaborative print with the group as well as one of your own.
Week 2: Inspired by poetry! Print an epic opening line or a beautiful word having been inspired by poetry books brought to the session.
Week 3: Print with colour! Mix up your inks and create beautiful letterpress monoprints.
Week 4: Big and small – play with font size and create some graphic postcards to take home.
Week 5: Collage and print – use newspaper prints and music sheets to print a fun and funky letterpress print.
nb. This workshop will be taking place at our new Huddersfield site where we’ve still got to put some of the final touches together before our official opening in the Spring of 2024. So, if you fancy a sneak peak at what’s going on behind the scenes; why not join us for a month of Thursday afternoons playing with print and words – spread out, make a mess and no one will mind!
Your tutor: Clare Alton-Fletcher
Clare Alton-Fletcher is the Director of West Yorkshire Print Workshop and a letterpress artist. In addition to tinkering in the letterpress area of the workshop and slowly collecting more and more of her own wooden type (apparently you can never have too much type!); she keeps herself busy running the print workshop and writing poetry.
Clare enjoys the tactile nature of wooden type, specifically when it’s old, a little tired and has developed many inherent imperfections from the many years of its hard use and labour capturing words and phrases for letterpress prints. She particularly loves creating and exploring monoprint alongside letterpress, with the ‘clunk’ and ‘judder’ of the artform bringing a sense of unpredictability!
Clare has taught pre-schoolers through to adult groups anything from portraiture to story-telling workshops and is looking forward to championing the joys letterpress with you, and pretty much anyone who’ll listen!
This course is suitable for beginners and well as those looking to learn a new printmaking technique or who want a process refresher. The only requirements are an experimental approach and an open mind!
