Description
Come and get your hands inky and your creativity flowing in this taster session workshop which will introduce you to the technique of Monoprint; a way of producing unique, one-off prints by rolling ink onto a plastic plate surface. Ink can be added or wiped off in certain areas, and a print is then taken from the plate. Multiple plates can be printed in register to achieve exciting layered compositions.
Learners will experiment with using inks, paintbrushes, stencils and a printing press to produce one off ‘mono’ prints which have a colourful, painterly quality.
Taster sessions are designed for people who have little or no prior knowledge or experience of printmaking but are also great for those who want to a refresher of a particular technique. Some people might find it easier to use an image as a basis to work from, rather than starting from scratch. If you do bring images to work from, please try to bring images which can be translated into block colours and shapes and that you will be working on plates around A5 size. Alternatively, don’t bring anything with you and just experiment with making marks and seeing what happens!
Your tutor : Cath Brooke
Cath Brooke has been making prints since she was first hooked at an evening class at Leeds College of Art over 20 years ago. She has been facilitating community arts projects for many years including teaching print to beginners and those with experience.
Cath’s own practice is inspired by urban and industrial landscapes. Much of her work is based on sketches around the Redcar area, the North and South Gare and the recently closed steelworks. Many of her works combine drypoint, monoprint and collagraph methods. Her approach to producing prints starts with an idea developed from sketches, which then evolves as the process takes over and she responds to the unexpected marks and colours in each layer.
Cath has been a member at WYPW for many years and is a member of Inkers printmakers, a group originally formed at the print workshop to share ideas, exhibit together and promote printmaking in the region.

Covid-19 safety :
To comply with government guidance for COVID-19, we have made several changes to how we operate. As a result, our workshops and the way we run courses looks a little different. We have everyone’s safety as our main priority and although it might not be quite the same as it was before, your ability to get stuck in and enjoy a spot of printmaking remains the same. Added measures to keep you safe include:
- All courses working with reduced numbers and to government guidance in relation to social distancing
- Requesting that everyone in the workshop, if able, wears either a face covering, mask or a visor
- Hand sanitiser provided on entry and attendee details taken to ensure that ‘Track and Trace’ procedures can take place
- Removal of any shared equipment or materials wherever possible.
Full guidance on our Covid-19 policies and risk assessment can be found on our website here.
