Come and get your hands inky and your creativity flowing in a friendly, artistic environment!
This session will introduce you to the technique of etching, an ‘intaglio’ printmaking process, where lines and tones are ‘bitten’ into a metal plate. (This is traditionally done using an acid, however we use a solution of copper sulphate – a less toxic alternative). A print is then taken from ink which is held within these bitten marks. Learners will be guided through the process of plate making, inking and printing in the traditional intaglio way.
Our taster sessions offer an introduction to some of the key printmaking techniques offered and practiced here at WYPW, and a glimpse into the processes involved in creating hand-made prints. You will be guided and encouraged by experienced artists who use printmaking in their own art practice, in a professionally equipped workshop setting
Your tutor : Neil Anderson
Neil Anderson worked in the commercial printing industry for over 25 years, and believes in learning the basics thoroughly, then applying those in any way that fits with your personality and artistic ambitions. “There are no rules, printmaking is fundamentally the transferring of ink from one surface to another – you can be very precise, or equally treat it in a very loose and free way. The main thing is that you learn, have fun and enjoy discovering the huge potential of printmaking.”
His practice explores an ongoing interested in what is hidden, what has been overlooked and is understated, everyday objects and landscapes, often “time-worn” and imbued with history and memory. Neil is a freelance artist who works and regularly teaches at West Yorkshire Print Workshop. He is also a member of the artist group ‘Inkers’ – www.inkers-printmakers.org.uk
Taster sessions are designed for people who have little or no prior knowledge or experience of printmaking, but are also great for those who want to a refresher of a particular technique.
All basic materials such as paper, tools and equipment are provided. Other materials and printmaking papers will be available to buy during the course if you would like to try something a bit different or take some materials home to try out.
After attending a taster session in monoprint, drypoint or linocut, you will be able to join WYPW as a member to continue to practice the skills you have learned. Screen printing and etching are processes which involve a bit more practice, so we would advise that learners attend a further course in these techniques before joining us as a member. We run regular weekend courses in screen printing, etching and other techniques, which cover processes in more detail and equip you with the skills and confidence needed to start using our workshops as a member. Sign up for membership within one month of attending the course you will receive a £5 discount. Find out more about the benefits of membership here.
