Hazel started her image-making career as a painter, graduating in the late nineties from Cardiff with a first class BA hons in Fine Art before exploring printmaking – a medium, in her own words “offering an unpredictability, but a need for discipline and ruthless accuracy” (we agree!).
Hazel’s practice explores the personal, the political and always the playful. Heavily influenced by Dada, Bauhaus, Constructivism, French cinema and the need to bite back from all the bad advice given at art school, printmaking is Hazel’s way of slowing down, exploring narratives and trapping ideas. She works mainly with silkscreens, but has recently been experimenting by combining screen-printing with wooden block type and chine colle.
