Description

Ever wondered how to translate your artwork on to fabric? Why not spend a weekend here with us at WYPW learning how to screen-print your ideas onto textiles in our fully equipped workshop!?

This fun, hands-on course will cover the whole screen-printing process – from how to plan and prepare your image, expose it onto screens using the photo-emulsion process and then print and fix your fabric so it can be made into things and washed. The process uses water based inks and you’ll get the chance to mix your colours to suit your ideas. During the workshop you’ll be working on plain cotton fabric to practise your new skills but after the workshop, and once you understand the basics, you’ll be able to apply your knowledge to print onto t-shirts, tote-bags etc as well as using the fabric you create to make all sorts of textile outcomes.

A great workshop for hobbyists, those looking to learn a new skill or perhaps those interested in starting a new textile product business!

Your tutor: Karen Stansfield

Karen Stansfield is a printmaker/maker who previously worked in television, theatre and the fashion industry. Karen recently completed a master’s in performance design at the University of Leeds where she explored the relationship between the audience and scenographic materials. Working from her home studio she explores the phenomenology of objects and materials using different printing methods onto textiles and paper.

Experience level

This course is suitable for beginners as well as those looking to learn a new printmaking technique or wanting a process refresher.

What’s included?

All basic materials such as inks, paper/fabric, tools, and equipment are included. On the workshop you will be provided with 0.5 metres of cotton fabric but feel free to bring along your own (natural fibre) material or product blanks such as a T-shirt.

What do I need to prepare before the course?

Before the course, it would be useful to think about the images you want to print and prepare some artwork. You will work towards producing a two-colour image using simple registration, (lining-up), techniques – max size A4. Please view handout linked here which will advise you how to prepare your image.

What’s next?

After attending this course you can join our workshop as a member and continue to use our facilities to make and develop your own work. The sooner the better, as the longer you leave it the more you are likely to forget! If you join up within one month of attending the course you will receive a £5 discount. Find out more about the benefits of membership here: https://www.wypw.org/shop/standard-membership/
