Process Taster: Lino Etching

Join printmaker and WYPW studio holder Fabian Osborne for an experimental workshop, exploring the process of lino-etching!

Lino etching is a relief printing process that uses caustic soda paste to etch into lino blocks. This technique can be a good addition to traditional cut lino. Over the course of the workshop you will experiment with mark-making through the use of simple ‘resists’, a way of protecting areas of your block against the caustic. This can produce a wide range of tonal marks. Once your blocks are etched, you will be guided through inking and printing, with the opportunity to explore colour inking and multi-layered prints, producing 2-3 prints each on good quality paper to take home. 

Our taster sessions offer a brief introduction to some of the key printmaking techniques practiced here at WYPW, as well as a glimpse into the processes involved in creating hand-made prints. You will be guided and encouraged by experienced artists who use printmaking in their own art practice, in a professionally equipped workshop setting. 

Your tutor: Fabian Osborne

Based at WYPW, Fabian Osborne’s practice explores the forms and hidden patterns found within natural and manmade landscapes. Interested in the transitory and unpredictability nature of the shapes and surfaces which inspire him, much of his work explores ideas around weathering and erosion. His recent research into lino etching has enabled him to replicate these qualities and currently forms the main focus of his print-making practice. 

Experience level

Taster sessions are designed for people who have little or no prior knowledge or experience of printmaking and are also great for those who feel they need a refresher on a particular technique.

What’s included in this session?

All course prices include basic materials such as inks, paper, tools and equipment.

What do I need to prepare?

Before you attend the course, it would be useful to think about the types images you may wish to print, this could be figurative, abstract or textural. The process itself is flexible in terms of how it can be approached.  

Pace and Accessibility:

This workshop is designed to be relaxed, supportive and accessible, with a maximum of six participants to ensure everyone receives individual guidance. You’ll be taken through each stage of the process step by step, with opportunities to work either seated or standing as you prefer. 

The workshop will take place in our downstairs studios. Level access is available via the external rear entrance only, as the internal route involves stairs. If you have any additional access or support needs, please get in touch before the workshop so we can do our best to accommodate them.

What’s next?

After attending this course you can join our workshop as a member and continue to use our facilities to make and develop your own work. If you are unable to attend your booked course, we may accept the fee paid as payment towards a place on the same or another course that takes place within the same financial year (running 1 April-31 March) following the originally booked event. Such a transfer will be on condition that we are informed in writing of your intentions four weeks prior to the originally booked event. Bookings can only be transferred once. If you are unable to attend, and not in a position either to transfer to another event, then the following charges will apply: Cancellation charges

• 16-12 weeks before the course: 50 % of the fee will be retained by WYPW
• Less than 12 weeks before the course: 100% of the fee will be retained by WYPW
• Please note that full payment is required for non-attendance on a booking that has been transferred.

West Yorkshire Print Workshop reserves the right to cancel or re-arrange courses if there are insufficient participants enrolled to run a viable course or for other unforeseen circumstances. We will do our best to give those who have already enrolled at least one weeks’ notice of cancellation. In such circumstances you will be offered a free transfer to another course date or a full refund of fees paid. By enrolling in our courses, participants agree to abide by the terms and conditions outlined above.
