Process Taster: Collagraph Printing

Description

Join guest tutor and print-maker Cath Brooke on this full day workshop, exploring Collagraph printing; a print process where an image is made from a plate collaged with different textures.

During the workshop you will explore basic collagraph methods using a range of textured papers, vinyls, glues, etc. Textures are added to the plate (mountboard) much like a collage. These collaged pieces can then be inked up to create collagraph print. Emphasis will be on learning collagraph techniques by making a series of prints exploring colour and texture. The session will include making a collagraph plate from scratch, followed by inking and printing methods. You will explore using both relief and intaglio methods to create a range of images.

Our taster sessions offer an introduction to some of the key printmaking techniques offered and practiced here at WYPW, and a glimpse into the processes involved in creating hand-made prints. You will be guided and encouraged by experienced artists who use printmaking in their own art practice, in a professionally equipped workshop setting. 

Your tutor : Cath Brooke

Cath Brooke has been making prints since she was first hooked at an evening class at Leeds College of Art over 20 years ago. She has been facilitating community arts projects for many years including teaching print to beginners and those with experience.

Cath’s own practice is inspired by urban and industrial landscapes. Much of her work is based on sketches around the Redcar area, the North and South Gare and the recently closed steelworks. Many of her works combine drypoint, monoprint and collagraph methods. Her approach to producing prints starts with an idea developed from sketches, which then evolves as the process takes over and she responds to the unexpected marks and colours in each layer.

Cath has been a member at WYPW for many years and is a member of Inkers printmakers, a group originally formed at the print workshop to share ideas, exhibit together and promote printmaking in the region.

Experience level

Taster sessions are designed for people who have little or no prior knowledge or experience of printmaking, and are also great for those who want to a refresher of a particular technique. 

What’s included in this session?

All course prices include basic materials such as inks, paper, tools and equipment. Other materials and printmaking papers will be available to buy during the course if you would like to try something a bit different, or take some materials home to try out.

After attending this course you can join our workshop as a member and continue to use our facilities to make and develop your own work. If you are unable to attend your booked course, we may accept the fee paid as payment towards a place on the same or another course that takes place within the same financial year (running 1 April-31 March) following the originally booked event. Such a transfer will be on condition that we are informed in writing of your intentions four weeks prior to the originally booked event. Bookings can only be transferred once.

• 16-12 weeks before the course: 50 % of the fee will be retained by WYPW
• Less than 12 weeks before the course: 100% of the fee will be retained by WYPW
• Please note that full payment is required for non-attendance on a booking that has been transferred.

West Yorkshire Print Workshop reserves the right to cancel or re-arrange courses if there are insufficient participants enrolled to run a viable course or for other unforeseen circumstances. We will do our best to give those who have already enrolled at least one weeks’ notice of cancellation. In such circumstances you will be offered a free transfer to another course date or a full refund of fees paid.
