Neoprene Foam Relief Print with Stephen Fowler

Discover the versatility and immediacy of relief print using Neoprene Foam (also known as craft foam) in this playful one-day workshop with printmaker and guest tutor Stephen Fowler. 

Neoprene Foam is a unique material celebrated for its springy nature, making it ideal for relief printing without the need for a press. A wooden spoon, bamboo barren or failing that your bare hands(!) will more than suffice to create your colourful prints. 

The foam comes in a range of sizes meaning you can experiment with delicate, intricate designs or make bold, large scale graphic impressions reminiscent of silkscreen prints. Its accessibility makes it perfect for both complete beginners and experienced printmakers looking to explore something new. 

During this workshop, you’ll learn to: 

• Create vibrant single-color prints. 

• Experiment with layered designs using multiple colours and overprint techniques. 

• Supersize your ideas with larger-scale prints. 

You will leave the workshop with a range of print outcomes and some new skills to explore further in your creative practice.  

Your tutor : Stephen Fowler

Stephen Fowler was born in Bristol, grew up in Cornwall, before leaving to study at Harrow School of Art, and Central Saint Martins in London. In 2021 Fowler graduated from UWE’s Multi-Disciplinary Printmaking MA, and received the Rebecca Smith Memorial Award in recognition for his practice based research into Tetra Pak Collagraph, Kitchen Sink Litho and Rubber Stamping.

Fowler has exhibited internationally at; Tate Modern, Minnesota Centre for Book Arts and White Columns New York. He is a senior lecturer in illustration at Leeds Arts University and teaches printmaking at San Francisco Centre for the Book, Spike Print Studio, KKV Grafik, Bath Spa University and Centre for Print Research – University of the West of England.
His book, a guide to Rubber Stamping, published by Lawrence King Publishing, is out now.

Experience level

This course is ideally suited to for artists, educators, printmakers and illustrators who have some or no experience in printmaking.

If you are unable to attend your booked course, we may accept the fee paid as payment towards a place on the same or another course that takes place within the same financial year (running 1 April-31 March) following the originally booked event. Such a transfer will be on condition that we are informed in writing of your intentions four weeks prior to the originally booked event. Bookings can only be transferred once. If you are unable to attend, and not in a position either to transfer to another event, then the following charges will apply: Cancellation charges

• 16-12 weeks before the course: 50 % of the fee will be retained by WYPW
• Less than 12 weeks before the course: 100% of the fee will be retained by WYPW
• Please note that full payment is required for non-attendance on a booking that has been transferred.

West Yorkshire Print Workshop reserves the right to cancel or re-arrange courses if there are insufficient participants enrolled to run a viable course or for other unforeseen circumstances. We will do our best to give those who have already enrolled at least one weeks’ notice of cancellation. In such circumstances you will be offered a free transfer to another course date or a full refund of fees paid. By enrolling in our courses, participants agree to abide by the terms and conditions outlined above.
