Join WYPW member Scarlette for a festive hands-on workshop exploring the craft of lino printing, with a focus on designing, carving, and printing your own design onto paper templates that transform into folded, 3D diamond-shaped decorations.
Over the duration of the workshop you will learn how to carve simple lino blocks, experiment with inking and printing techniques, and explore the possibilities of pattern and repeat design. We will focus on generating artwork through carving and printing, encouraging you to think creatively about pattern, mark-making, and how flat prints can be transformed into sculptural forms. As a technique, lino printing is also ideal for cards, gift tags, wrapping papers, and artworks and this session will give you the foundational skills to apply the technique across multiple potential outcomes in the future.
You’ll leave the session with a set of your own lino-printed decorations, your hand carved lino block, and some learning materials to help you continue experimenting with lino printing beyond the workshop.
What will be covered in the session?
- How to design and carve a lino block suitable for printing onto paper templates.
- Understanding how relief printing can be used to create repeat patterns, decorative motifs, and festive imagery.
- The history and principles of lino printing, from traditional block carving to contemporary art and craft applications.
- Time to focus on carving, inking, and printing your own lino block.
- Learn how to fold, assemble, and glue your printed templates into 3D diamond-shaped baubles.
What to bring/prepare:
All materials and equipment will be provided for this session, including lino, carving tools, inks, and bauble templates. If you have any specific imagery, sketches, or pattern ideas you’d like to work from, feel free to bring them along for inspiration.
Your tutor : Scarlette Averley
Born a Southerner, Scarlette has lived and worked in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, for the majority of her career. She is a studio-holder at West Yorkshire Print Workshop and an experienced printmaker and arts facilitator, working extensively in community and statutory settings. Her specialist area is the Reduction Lino Cut method of printmaking. Scarlette’s own practice is centered in ‘place’, exploring locations and buildings of personal significance or local interest. Use of colour is pivotal to her work and her palette tends to be bright, bold and whimsical, which reflects her relationship with and interpretations of her subjects. These dense layers of colour are achieved with heavy duty oil-based inks that leave a sheen or glossy finish on her prints. Scarlette’s pieces are always limited edition, original handmade prints, in varying edition sizes.
