International Women’s Day – RISO zine workshop

Join us as we celebrate International Women’s Day by exploring zine-making with zinester, printmaker, and educator Vicki Senior.

In this hands-on workshop, you’ll be guided through the zine-making process and introduced to Jeany-Jean, West Yorkshire Print Workshop’s very own Risograph printer! Using the Riso, you’ll create a zine celebrating an inspirational woman -or women- you want the world to know about.

Your subject could be a world-famous feminist icon, your mum, a friend, a historical figure, or someone whose influence deserves to be recognised. This session is about celebrating the women we admire and feel grateful for, in whatever form that takes for you.

Come with a few women in mind, and feel free to bring images you’re happy to cut up, along with any other ephemera you’d like to work with. We’ll show you how to design, assemble, and print your zine, producing six copies to take away and share with family and friends.

Experience level

This session provides a solid introduction to creating artwork utilising the Riso printer. You don’t need to have any prior experience to sign up, we’ll go through everything from scratch all we ask is you come with creative curiosity and a willingness to get hands-on.

What’s included?

All course prices include basic materials such as paper, tools and equipment.

Your Tutor: Vicki Senior

Vicki Senior is a printmaker, art educator and creative producer for children and young people at WYPW. With a diverse creative practice, her experience encompasses a broad spectrum of printmaking techniques from screen-printing through to letterpress and most recently the intaglio processes of drypoint printing using TetraPak.

Holding an MA in Multidisciplinary Printmaking from the University of West England, her approach to print is experimental with a specific interest around the combination of text and image through the translation of traditional process to both graphic design and the production of artist books. Informed by her background in design and commercial processes, Vicki brings an openness and enthusiasm to working with new techniques and is particularly excited to investigate new ideas via the recently acquired risograph machine at West Yorkshire Print Workshop hoping to further her knowledge and experience of zine making.

A former art teacher; Vicki is keen to spread the joy of printmaking to the next generation of creatives! Whether that’s through developing playful, printed characters with her daughter or encouraging families and young people to get involved and express themselves through the medium of inky play.

Vicki currently practices from her kitchen table in Slaithwaite and here at WYPW.

Pace and Accessibility:

This workshop is designed to be relaxed, supportive and accessible, with a maximum of eight participants to ensure everyone receives individual guidance. You’ll be taken through each stage of the process step by step, with opportunities to work either seated or standing as you prefer. Regular breaks will be included throughout the session. The Riso is located in our Gallery space which has level access and an accessible toilet. If you have any additional access or support needs, please get in touch before the workshop so we can do our best to accommodate them.

After attending this course you’ll be able to sign up as a RISO member; enjoying all the great benefits of being part of the WYPW creative community alongside the ability to get printing! You can find out more about becoming a RISO Member and signing up via our members website or by asking one of our team. You’ll need to attend a technical induction before you get started which will provide you with the knowledge to confidently work independently, set up and alter the settings on the machine.

• If you have to cancel:

If you are unable to attend your booked course, we may accept the fee paid as payment towards a place on the same or another course that takes place within the same financial year (running 1 April-31 March) following the originally booked event. Such a transfer will be on condition that we are informed in writing of your intentions four weeks prior to the originally booked event. Bookings can only be transferred once. If you are unable to attend, and not in a position either to transfer to another event, then the following charges will apply: Cancellation charges

• 16-12 weeks before the course: 50 % of the fee will be retained by WYPW
• Less than 12 weeks before the course: 100% of the fee will be retained by WYPW
• Please note that full payment is required for non-attendance on a booking that has been transferred.

• If we have to cancel:

West Yorkshire Print Workshop reserves the right to cancel or re-arrange courses if there are insufficient participants enrolled to run a viable course or for other unforeseen circumstances. We will do our best to give those who have already enrolled at least one weeks’ notice of cancellation. In such circumstances you will be offered a free transfer to another course date or a full refund of fees paid. By enrolling in our courses, participants agree to abide by the terms and conditions outlined above.
