Alternative Lithography on Lino with Scarlett Rebecca (2day)

Join specialist printmaker and guest tutor Scarlett Rebecca for a creative weekend workshop exploring lino lithography, an accessible printmaking process that combines expressive drawing with the bold qualities of relief print.

Lithography is the perfect process for artists who want to combine drawing with printmaking. Lino lithography is an accessible, low-toxic alternative to traditional lithography that doesn’t require specialist equipment, making it easy to continue after the workshop.

Using lino as our print surface means we’re also able to include all the fantastic qualities of relief print. 

Over the weekend you’ll use lino as your printing matrix, using it as a surface from which we will reproduce drawn marks using a myriad of drawing materials. We will also be combining carved elements using lino in the traditional relief way and layering colours using the lino as a surface for monotype.

Itinerary: 

Day One: 

• introduction and discussion of examples 
• demonstration of preparing lino 
• demonstration of drawing materials
• participants creating imagery directly onto the lino
• processing the lino

Day Two: 

• carving into the lino
• printing lithographic layers
• printing multiple layers
• adding monotype
• group discussion & review 

Experience level:

This weekend course is suitable for beginner printmakers who those who would like to explore a new printmaking process and take their drawing to the next level. 

What to prepare:

All materials will be provided during your session. You might find it helpful to consider the type of imagery you would like to explore over the duration of the course in advance of the session. We recommend bringing sketchbooks, photos or other reference sources to work from or inspire you. You will be working at approximately A4 in scale. 

Pace and Accessibility:

This workshop is designed to be relaxed, supportive and accessible, with a maximum of six participants to ensure everyone receives individual guidance. You’ll be taken through each stage of the process step by step, with opportunities to work either seated or standing as you prefer. The workshop will be located in our lower-ground spaces, access to which is via internal stairs or the external ramp around the building. If you have any access or support needs, please get in touch before the workshop so we can do our best to accommodate them.

Scarlett Rebecca is a printmaker, specialising in stone and alternative lithographic processes. She works from her studio in north Wales where she collaborates with other artists on stone lithography. Scarlett has a wealth of printmaking resources on her Patreon and teaches printmaking courses online and from workshops around the country. What can I do after I’ve learnt the basic process?

After attending this course you’ll be able to sign up as a WYPW member; enjoying all the great benefits of being a part of our print community and the ability to get printing! You can find out more about becoming a Member and signing up via our members website or by asking one of our team. You’ll need to attend a technical induction (free of charge following a course, usual cost £25) which will provide you with the knowledge to confidently work on this process independently.

If you are unable to attend your booked course, we may accept the fee paid as payment towards a place on the same or another course that takes place within the same financial year (running 1 April-31 March) following the originally booked event. Such a transfer will be on condition that we are informed in writing of your intentions four weeks prior to the originally booked event. Bookings can only be transferred once. If you are unable to attend, and not in a position either to transfer to another event, then the following charges will apply: Cancellation charges

• 16-12 weeks before the course: 50 % of the fee will be retained by WYPW
• Less than 12 weeks before the course: 100% of the fee will be retained by WYPW
• Please note that full payment is required for non-attendance on a booking that has been transferred.

• If we have to cancel:

West Yorkshire Print Workshop reserves the right to cancel or re-arrange courses if there are insufficient participants enrolled to run a viable course or for other unforeseen circumstances. We will do our best to give those who have already enrolled at least one weeks’ notice of cancellation. In such circumstances you will be offered a free transfer to another course date or a full refund of fees paid. By enrolling in our courses, participants agree to abide by the terms and conditions outlined above.
