This five-day Summer School workshop offers the unique experience of combining Japanese paper dyeing (Orizome & Suminagashi) with Japanese book-binding and box-making.

Learning the techniques to dye papers using marbling and resist dyeing to include them as the covers for 5 different Toji binding styles, (four-hole, five-hole, noble, tortoise shell and hemp leaf) housed within a Hako Chitsu (wrap around box). Using authentic Japanese papers, (washi), and making your own book cloth by paper baking cotton fabrics, this course provides the opportunity to create a selection of the strongest, most elegant and practical bindings for printmakers and artists’ working with the book form and the skills to construct cloth, decorative papers, books and boxes in the future.

Using Orizome and Suminagashi Japanese dyeing and marbling techniques, you will explore the effects of geometric folding forms and fluid lines on mulberry paper to create endless combinations of possible patterns and colour. The course promises an insight into several traditional Japanese practices which continue to be in use as a decorative technique still mastered today. Moving on, the unique papers you create will be used to make covers for a series of several stunning Japanese stab sewn bindings.

Catering for artists with an interest in cross-processing, bookbinding, and a love of textile repeat pattern. You can expect to leave the workshop with a series of beautiful hand decorated and sewn books housed in a bespoke box and the skills and confidence to make more of each in the future at home.

Your tutor : Lucy May Scofield

Lucy May Schofield (1979) is a British printmaker. After studying at the London College of Printing she spent several years living in Japan, and despite now being based back in the UK, she continues to study wood-block printing with Japanese master craftspeople using traditional and contemporary mokuhanga techniques. This year she was elected an Associate member of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers. Her work has recently been presented at The Kentler International Drawing Space in New York, Southern Vermont Arts Centre and The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition London. Her work is held in public and private collections including Tate Britain, The Ashmolean Museum Oxford, Yale Centre for British Art and Stanford University. In 2021 she was awarded a Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust award to develop her practice in mokuhanga. Lucy was awarded the Flourish Award for excellence in printmaking in 2020.

This course is ideally suited to those with some book making experience, however all the basic methods of Japanese binding will be covered so beginners are welcomed.

If you have to cancel:

If you are unable to attend your booked course, we may accept the fee paid as payment towards a place on the same or another course that takes place within the same financial year (running 1 April-31 March) following the originally booked event. Such a transfer will be on condition that we are informed in writing of your intentions four weeks prior to the originally booked event. Bookings can only be transferred once.

If you are unable to attend, and not in a position either to transfer to another event, then the following charges will apply:

Cancellation charges

16-12 weeks before the course: 50 % of the fee will be retained by WYPW
Less than 12 weeks before the course: 100% of the fee will be retained by WYPW
Please note that full payment is required for non-attendance on a booking that has been transferred.

If we have to cancel:

West Yorkshire Print Workshop reserves the right to cancel or re-arrange courses if there are insufficient participants enrolled to run a viable course or for other unforeseen circumstances. We will do our best to give those who have already enrolled at least one weeks’ notice of cancellation. In such circumstances you will be offered a free transfer to another course date or a full refund of fees paid.
