From 1-5 March, we’re showcasing a selection of our artist network and their journeys into making life as an artist as part of Creative Careers Week.
Our second artist today is our very own Exhibitions and Events Coordinator Martyn Lucas!
Who are you and what do you do?
My name is Martyn Lucas and I am the Exhibitions and Events Coordinator at West Yorkshire Print Workshop .
Did you study a creative subject? If so, what and where?
After a foundation course, I completed a BA in Fine Art at Reading University and then an MA at the University of London.

Name 3 great things about your job.
Collaborating with artists to create exhibitions. Engaging people with art. The ‘hands-on’ work of putting up a show.
What’s been your favourite exhibition to curate and why?
Too many to mention! Our national open submission exhibition ‘Flourish Award for Excellence in Printmaking’ is always a good one. The works are selected by an independent panel of judges and the standard always high.
I love the challenge of curating 12 or 13 artists’ work in the gallery so that conversations emerge between the artworks.

What top tip would you have for a young creative wanting to follow in your footsteps?
Listen and learn at every point – from experts and non-experts.
Be curious, think and try out your own ideas.
