Furrowed Browes

Andrew Warburton established Area Rugs and Carpets in 2002 to design and manufacture custom hand tufted rugs, wall hangings and carpets for both private and commercial interiors. With over 35 years as being a hand tufted rug maker, Andrew has established Area Rugs and Carpets as one of the leading hand tufting companies in the UK. Although Andrew is a hand tufted rug maker, not principally a print artist, he loves printmaking and uses various print processes to inform and inspire the designs of his rugs and wall hangings. Andrew likes to plan out his textile designs beforehand through the means of either lino print or a collagraph. These are then translated onto a larger scale on his hand tufting frame. Final colour choice is usually brought together by the yarns from his stock at his studio in either Pure Wool, Linen or Silk.

“Furrowed Browes”, an accidental misspelling and playful nod to the trenches ploughed in Yorkshire fields, brings together Andrew’s hand tufted rugs with the prints and drawings used to plan and inform his final textile pieces. Andrew’s inspiration for these early prints and drawings usually starts with photography during walks, mainly around the Yorkshire countryside. He has always used photography as a main source of inspiration since his University days, graduating in 1987 with a BA in Carpet Design & Related Textiles from Kidderminster & Wolverhampton.
