20:20 Print Exchange – Important Info

20:20 Print Exchange – Important Info

The exchange is organised by Hot Bed Press Printmaker’s Studio in Salford. Printmaking groups/organisations from around the UK and beyond can take part, and WYPW have taken part each year since its beginning. Each artist who takes part makes an edition of 25 prints on 20x20cm paper, which are collected by us, and submitted to Hot Bed Press. Each artist then receives a box of 20 random prints back, and has one of their prints shown online and in a touring exhibition the following year.

For some general information about the print exchange, head over to the website: https://www.2020printexchange.com/ and you can also follow on Instagram:  https://www.instagram.com/2020printexchange/

The cost to take part is £17. This includes £15 charged by Hot Bed Press, and an extra £2 which goes towards postage and packaging the prints our end to send across to Hot Bed Press for sorting. We will email you an invoice when you sign up, which can be paid online.

Print Guidelines from Hot Bed Press for all taking part
(You can also find this on the website: https://www.2020printexchange.com/print)

  • Paper dimensions must be 20×20 cm. This is crucial. Any smaller and they become tricky and time consuming to count when they are amongst other prints, and any larger and they risk not fitting in the boxes, and may become damaged in the process! However, the image may be any size or shape on the paper, including ‘full bleed’.
  • All print submissions should be in order and numbered as an edition of 25, labelled 1/25 – 25/25. This should be a unique edition made especially for the Print Exchange. It’s important to note that artists don’t receive their own prints back, so if they want to print more for themselves, please don’t raise the edition but start anew.
  • Each print must be clearly labelled with: Artist name, group name, edition number, title, print method and year. You could add extra information such as your Instagram handle or website if you wish, for people receiving your print to look you up and connect.
  • All traditional ‘hand-made’ printmaking methods are encouraged and welcomed. Whilst Risograph prints are acceptable, work should not be a reproduction, photocopy or ‘Giclee’ print.
  • All prints are added to the 20:20 online gallery.
  • We encourage use of good quality, printmaking paper, usually ranging from 90gsm to 320gsm, but lighter weight Japanese papers are also suitable. It is also possible to print on fabric, but please bear in mind that prints should be able to fit into our boxes with 19 other prints, and therefore should not be too heavy or thick.
  • Please allow ample time when planning your prints to ensure that they are dry by the time of submission. Lino prints in particular can take a while to dry, and we have received some very sticky prints in the past, which make counting tricky for our lovely volunteers, but also risk damaging neighbouring prints once they are boxed up.
  • Please do not interleave your prints with tissue or newsprint. It slows the sorting, and adds to our pile of waste. THE BIG SORT…Once all prints have been received, it’s a big collective effort from staff & volunteers at Hot Bed Press to organise, sort, collate and package the 1000’s of prints to send back to workshops. We do our best to improve each year and to ensure that each participant receives a random selection of prints.
