We are thrilled to share the latest exhibition at West Yorkshire Print Workshop, ‘Print, Music and Movement’. The launch took place on 8th July 2023 and brings together six artists’ work: David Armes, Nick Loaring, Vanessa Oo, Graham Pilling, Cameron Steward and Kai West.
The exhibition, curated as part of the Year of Music in Kirklees looks at music and movement through the lens of printmaking. At the launch event, visitors were able to enjoy the works up close and learn more about different printmaking processes, from letterpress printing to screenprinting.
The launch event was attended by two of the artists, Kai West and Vanessa Oo who kindly shared some of their process and chatted to visitors about their work. The display is a vibrant and colourful exploration of how music and movement inspires printmaking and how print has helped promote and market gigs, festivals and bands, from the Arctic Monkeys to York based band, Bull.
While visitors enjoyed a relaxed look at the exhibition, a gelli plate printing workshop was underway, which allowed attendees to try their hand at printing and be inspired by music by using old CDs and music stencils to create fun and colourful mini prints. Participants explored this technique and learnt a little about colour mixing, layering prints and registration techniques for creating successful gelli prints. Taster workshops like this are part of WYPW’s offer at this space in the Piazza and allow participants to discover the joy of printmaking.
The venue itself is the Print Haus in the Piazza Centre (opposite the doors of the town library) and is a relaxed environment for the exhibition. As part of the ‘Temporary Contemporary’ initiative, this creative space breathes new life into an old shop building, making it a hub of artistic activity and cultural exchange. The Print Haus serves as the perfect backdrop for the exhibition and means you can drop into the exhibition for free when you visit the town centre.

As the exhibition continues its run from July 8th to August 19th (every Thursday and every other Saturday) 11-3:30pm, we invite everyone to come down and have a look at the exhibition. Works are for sale, so please support Northern printmakers and if you see something you like, do ask a member of the team who can help you.
